The Akita is a big dog with an even bigger heart.
They are loyal, loving companions who will protect you from harm and make you laugh every day. They are also burly heavy-boned spitz-type dogs of imposing stature. Standing 24 to 28 inches at the shoulder, Akitas have a dense coat that comes in several colors, including white. The head is broad and massive, and is balanced in the rear by a full, curled-over tail. The erect ears and dark, shining eyes contribute to an expression of alertness, a hallmark of the breed.
Akitas are quiet, fastidious dogs. Wary of strangers and often intolerant of other animals, Akitas will gladly share their silly, affectionate side with family and friends. They thrive on human companionship.
Breed Overview
The affectionate nature of a breed is determined by how much affection the breed tends to give out, rather than how much affection they require from their owner. Some breeds are naturally more outgoing and affectionate than others.
How easy or difficult it will be to train your pup, and how willing or unwilling your dog is to learn new things. Some breeds just want to make their owners proud, while others prefer to do what they want, when they want to, wherever they want!
How adaptable a breed is. This can include changes in living conditions, noise, weather, daily schedule, and other variations in day-to-day life.
Breeds that are high energy need more exercise and mental stimulation than breeds that are low energy. High energy dogs are ready to go and eager for their next adventure. They’ll spend their time running, jumping, and playing throughout the day. Low energy dogs are like couch potatoes – they’re happy to simply lay around and snooze.
History
The Akita is a medium-sized dog that originated in Japan and is known for its loyalty and hardworking nature. The breed has been around since the 17th century, when it was developed by exiled nobles who wanted to create a large, versatile hunting dog. They bred generations of dogs together until they had a strong, sturdy dog that could work in packs on big game such as wild boar, deer, and even Yezo bears.
Akitas were once only owned by the imperial family and their court members, but today they are employed by everyone from just plain folks to world-class family guardians. They’ve been the subject of myth and legend for centuries and are considered an important part of Japanese culture—a child usually receives an Akita figurine when born signifying happiness and long life according to an old Japanese tradition.
